Loiyangalani Rabies Project
The community centred private-public partnership uses a Manyatta to Manyatta approach in reaching the last mile dog populations in rabies hot spot zones of Marsabit County.
The rabies vaccination project is being conducted in Loiyangalani town, Marsabit County. ASAL eXtension is the lead implementer and fund raiser and is working in partnership with the county government and NGO partners. Loiyangalani town is located at the Southern shores of Lake Turkana. This means that dogs have readily accessible high quality fish waste and drinking water and this has contributed to a high dog population and concurrent high burden of dog and human rabies cases. The project will run for three years and aims at achieving zero human rabies cases in Loiyangalani ward by 2025.
In November 2023 ASAL partnered with Vet Treks Foundation to conduct a 4-day high volume high quality spay and neuter clinic that was combined with mass rabies vaccination.
