LOIYANGALANI RABIES PROJECT

A community-centered public-private partnership is using a “Manyatta to Manyatta” approach to reach last-mile dog populations in rabies hotspot areas of Marsabit County. The rabies vaccination project, led and funded by ASAL eXtension in collaboration with the county government and NGO partners, is being implemented in Loiyangalani town, located on the southern shores of Lake Turkana. The town’s abundant fish waste and water access have led to a high dog population and increased rabies cases in both dogs and humans. Running for three years, the project aims to achieve zero human rabies cases in Loiyangalani Ward by 2025. In November 2023, ASAL and Vet Treks Foundation held a 4-day spay and neuter clinic alongside mass rabies vaccinations.
